Poem

AFTERIMAGE

The Christmas tree atop
North Arundel Hospital
pierces the night’s eyeball
with all the season’s colors wired together
like the row of stitches
closing the bloody gash
in my mother’s forehead
as she lay on the Fast Track
her face veiled in blue cloth
her left hand in mine
as upon a mirror
