An Excursion From Melancholia by Phumelelokuhle Ngidi

Don’t come look for me,
I’ll be gone,
Leaving a hollow house
With shredded papers of unfinished poems.

Don’t come look for me,
I’m torn,
Between churches and liquor stores
Whirling through songs of broken men and vagabonds.

Don’t come look for me,
I’ll be gone,
To distant gardens where trees
speak to each other in clicks
Where silence affords me to think,
About nothing.

Don’t come look for me,
I’m torn,
Between the stars and the earth,
Searching
Between what is right and wrong

Don’t come look for me,
I’ll be gone,
Leaving you with your trolls and goblins
This time I won’t be there when you’re falling
Into your melancholic dungeon.

Don’t come look for me,
I’m torn,
Between my mind and my heart
I don’t know which to listen,
I can’t even sleep at night.

Don’t come look for me,
I’m torn
Don’t come look for me,
I’m gone.
