My Suid Afrika by Jan Grundling

Poem

Van hier het ek gekyk
Die son se wit opkoms
Sy sak in vele kleur
Jou berge het my gelok
Laat wonder
Wat lê agter elke fenomeen
Die Kaap van storms
Het my laat glo
Dat jy ook maar ‘n einde het
Dat in alle mooi
‘n begin en einde is.

Ek het jou vrug ge-eet
Grond bewerk deur pa en boer
Ook deur hulle pa’s se pa’s
Water het ek gedrink
Uit riviere, puts en pyp
Dan en wan
Was daar te min
Soms te veel
Vars en brak het ek geproe
So het ek ‘n man geword
Gebrei om taai te wees
Jou terug te gee
my alles
Vir my Suid Afrika

Hoe het dit dan gekom dat ek
Jou wil verlaat
Jou wil agterlaat
Jou wil uitlaat
Die einde selfs beplan
Nou dat ek buite staan?

This poem is about an ongoing struggle in the mind of a South African. This is the country of his birth, his learning, and his fulfillment. Yet, he is considering emigration because he feels like an outsider. He wonders why this possibility has entered his mind.
