Lovers of poetry will experience the first of its kind poetry concert this October when Magnum Opus Poetry presents #TheCosmosTribe at the Wits Great Hall on Saturday the 27th. Literature, art, theatre and live music over spoken word have had enough of taking the back seat as Magnum Opus, a Joburg based poetry trio, put together a show of all shows to close the poetry year.  The fire line-up is made of a selection of the biggest names currently in the poetry scene.

Koleka Putuma, Modise Sekgothe, Mutle Mothibe, Wazi Kunene, Emmah Mabye, Nomashenge Dlamini, Puns and Things, Noluthando Buthelezi, Belita Andre and a special performance by the hosts Magnum Opus.

The names in the line-up consist of award-winning poets, radio personalities, authors, poets who have performed on international stages multiple times, and the only ever poets to perform a one hour show at The Durban July this year.

#TheCosmosTribe is a day where stars will align in more ways than one at the Wits Great Hall“, said Thobani Mntambo, ‘one of the Opus guys’, as they refer to themselves individually. The other two are Sibusiso Ndebele and Rabbie Wrote. Mntambo said with guidance from established poetry houses such as Word N Sound (WNS) and Current State of Poetry (CSP), Opus has been able to put together this first of its kind show.

All three of us have performed at WNS and CSP individually as we progressed through our poetry careers. We have been prepared for this moment by heads of these houses, Vusumzi Phakathi and Thabiso ‘Afurakan’ Mohare.”

“The fruits of patience and determination are always juicier,” said Ndebele.

Since 2016 when we formed Magnum Opus, this is the show we have been working to put together,” Ndebele explained.

“It is with great pleasure that this show comes at a time when WNS and CSP have formed a union of their own with a weekly poetry show on Massiv Metro FM,” he said.

We all know the names in the line-up are juggernauts in this art. But having them all assemble on one stage as big as the Wits Great Hall was monumental for us,” Ndebele said.

A line up of this magnitude under one roof will have a huge impact on the poetry scene, said Wrote.

We wanted to produce a ‘The Avengers’ equivalent of a poetry show.” he chuckled.

The poetry scene has seen everyone in the line on stages by themselves, or three of them at a time at most. Four if the show was big enough, like the WNS Festival, Poetry Africa or similar big international events.” he said.

“Everyone in the poetry scene has been waiting for this show. A concert vibe with a 100% local poets on the line-up. And here come The Cosmos Tribe.” Wrote said.

Magnum Opus Presents: #TheCosmosTribe will take place at Wits Great Hall on October 27 at 2 pm.

Tickets go for R180 at www.webtickets.co.za and R200 at the door.
