Until 1994, the 16th of December was commemorated as The Day of the Vow (the Day of the Covenant or Dingaan’s Day)1 as a religious public holiday that traces its origins back to the Battle of Blood River2. The day was renamed Day of Reconciliation because of it’s significance to both the Afrikaaner and the zulu people, it was intended to foster reconciliation and national unity3.
