A smile by Doni

Poem

It began with a smile
drifting down a bright corridor
through desert and snow,
resting in the ever-lit city.

Have you ever sat down
under a fake, blue sky
and heard the birds chirp
in your head?

Have you ever seen
a song made out of water
in a desert where
it never rains?

And have you ever felt
the soft touch of time
standing still,
waiting for you to start living.

It began with a smile, but
the smile had a touch
of sadness, hidden
behind your dark, brown eyes.

I’d like to think that
I would have seen it
had i not kept
my eyes closed.

But deep down I know
that the sadness was also
in the gentle touch of your fingers,
and in the light gurgle of your laugh.

It was in the soft scent
of your perfume, and
in the memories that you
casually brought up.

But most of all, it was
in the eyes of a little girl
that looked ahead,
from afar.

I will always remember
your smile, one of longing,
sadness and newly found trust,
even if it ended
before it had begun.
