Abandoned Nest by Amy Blanchard

Poem

Last Spring,
a pair of Cape turtle doves
flew back and forth,
piling twigs high.

I watched from my window,
as I cradled
tiny, new you in my arms.

Now, the frangipani trees
have lost all their blooms.
Swirls of yellows, pinks and whites
are brown.

And tucked on top
of the paint-peeling pillar
sits an empty nest.

I don’t envy those parents their discovery.
