To my sweet yesterday:
You could have told me
How excruciating growth would be
How the change from water
To wine is not all it seems, there are
Grapes who lose their innocence in-between
Trading triumph for trauma
With decadent promises that
It is character molding
All for a bigger cause?
Cause you wanted out?
Cause you were tired?
Cause it is not accepting defeat
Just letting go of an obvious
Dead end?
Was I not worthy of guidance?
And the golden path to
Heaven’s wisdom?
Is said wisdom attained
By being drained by
This prison
You say is of my own making
Life is what not what happens to me is it?
It is my attitude towards it
My love you have got to be kidding
When we let this slide, we carried
Living organisms
To limbo graves, what we
Were meant to be, has not died
And it begs to move forward
Constantly carving reminders
Craving to cuddle with completion
Constantly crying I am bothered
At the chapters I will churn out to my children
When they ask, “Father, what is the origin
Story of you being a cynic?”
I am supposed to teach them resilience
How do I teach it when I was not
Made in its image?
You should have told me
“Keep building even when
I am not living, keep building
With refused stones
They will shelter you
From the critics”
And here lies a hypocrite
Newfound joy is the district
Yesterday built a home in
While I am left with the pieces
You left me to give in
To defeat and I did it
In giving up I was reborn
To a life where surrender’s a fatal decision
I chose to start over
Placing myself on the pivot
I chose to start bolder
Only giving up on these clinking…chains.
