Encounter and Becoming by Thompson Emate

Poem

A sad surprise changes me;
I bear the wounds of my hurt.
Within me lies a shrouded night,
and I gradually withdraw from my open-heartedness,
Taking each step with care and caution.

I learn from every encounter,
rising from the ashes of my sojourn.
I see each day and every person with new eyes,
noting that nothing and no one should be viewed through yesterday’s lens.

There is a transformation that occurs with each encounter.
A friend may become a foe in the face of envy and strife.
The labyrinth of life is a meadow of mysteries.
We become who we are with as much light as allowed into our chambers.
