Explain It To The Children by Brendan Ewen

Brendan Ewen | March 7th, 2026 | poetry | No Comments

Poem

Schoolgirls lie dead,
In that far-off country you don’t know of yet.
You are too young to understand oil wars,
or that thin line between a greedy and oppressive leader.

I don’t need to explain this.

You know something is wrong.
We haven’t turned on the news,
and won’t for a while.
I am scared,
How does one explain empty shoes filled with gravel?
