Favourite Things by Stephen Kingsnorth

Poet Bio

When asked about our favourite things
some think of subjects, objects, nouns;
apart from winter into spring –
as featured by that singing nun –
the given list, though picturesque,
is full of concrete, not abstract.
I know film, listening children know
those solids that mind’s eye can see –
but older age, distractions change –
just as told fortune favours brave.
So, courage, hope drawn from despair,
the best of love, called charity,
a sacrifice made off the scale,
that grace seen best when crossroads loom –
it’s these few head my favourites.
This commonwealth, seen many homes,
most often through our motherhood.
