Poem

Strange fruit.
He is handed a grocery bag.
The bag: filled with pieces of human meat.
“Is this my child?” he asks.
“Bury it like it is your child.”
Biden sends more bombs for the harvest.
Strange fruit.

Poet Bio

Charl Landsberg is a South African artist, poet, writer, and musician who’s work often speaks on issues of social justice.

Glossary: “Strange Fruit” in this case is a reference to the poem and song written by Abel Meeropol known as Lewis Allan in 1937 and popularised by Billie Holiday in 1939. The song is a protest against the lunchings of African Americans and their particular horror, particularly the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in 1930 evoking their dead bodies as ‘strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees’ hanging from the trees.
