Gluey tongues of politicians by AMOS

poem

Job promises are mere flowers
Adorning our youth’s standing ears,
Weaverbirds churn Queen’s language
And weave air-conned warm nests,
Politicians’ glorious mansions
Where their newly-hatched chicks
Chirp with silver spoons in their mouths

Job promises is a politician’s slogan
Sung day and night by a wise chameleon
Steadily poised with a gluey tongue
Ready to shoot and catch a pathetic vote
As he retracts within a carapace
Of his shame like a shrewd tortoise

Young people of this land
Toiled in vain harvesting education
Their heads’ tanks overflowing with knowledge
Having capped Masters and PhD degrees, Cum Laude!
Their mums’ ululations pierced the blue sky
Dads’ praises raised their hopes like a dough
Kneaded for baking of a palatable future

Decades and centuries died
Without the resurrection of any job
That was once buried in their ears
By diligent vote hunting politicians
Who vanished like smiling ghosts
Only to haunt us again in the next elections

Politicians are buffalo bulls
When they sneeze
Egrets bow and worship
And nurse their ego
Lest they lift heavy hooves
And crush voters’ expectations
With sheer ignorance!

When elections are at hand
Good Samaritan offer to push
Crippled soul in a wheelchair
Giving him a puddle in the desert
Reassuring him of new South Africa
Descending from heaven where
There is no thirst nor hunger
But the pig wore my golden ring
And grunted back to his suburban mansion
Where he swam in his filthy riches
Forgetting about the existence
Of poverty-stricken *emjondolo dwellers
Whom he dumped like used condoms

*Emjondolo dwellers-poor people who dwell in shacks
