My Father’s Shoes by Aaishah Mayet

Cavernous brogues of sacrifice
Squelching in silent toil
Cracked soles
Raising young souls
In the spirit of deep love

Soldiering on
Permeable to rainwater
To children’s tears
To other’s needs
Impermeable to his own
