Flatter than a quarter
left one a train track,
I tried to type
about my 42nd birthday cake,
but instead of sweetening the page
with metaphorical icing,
I ended up staring at the blank whiteness
and felt the weight of words
crush me,
until this poem rose up
from nothing,
as if my writer’s block the most important
ingredient.
