of the most peculiar things
it is the bell that rings
calling people in to see the show
as the actors tread the boards
and the soprano sings
and the doors are closed
so if you’re late you can’t go
no getting past the velvet chords
you can’t impose
a disturbance on those
that came, in-time, to see the show
so if you’re late
too bad, you can’t go
it’s the same with my heart
when you treat me like dirt
and tear me apart
though you swoon and flirt
the time comes
and I play my part
the show calls
cue the drums
guitar strums
chorus hums
lock the doors
prep the floors
my heart’s got on her dancing shoes
and the bell rings out
you’re nowhere near
so don’t get the blues
don’t shed a tear
when the other shoe drops
the door locks
on with the show
on with the show
