This fire has been lovingly prepared
starting small with paper, shavings, kindling,
only later adding logs
to this testament of trees.
These coals glow with a life of their own,
gray ashy surface dots sun of them,
contained orange motion,
burning themselves to extinction.
There above, sacramental sizzle,
fat drops and pops, flesh chars,
smell calls all to fire to partake of the feast.
Juices run clear over the braai.
