Own Goal by Francis Conlon

Poem

Another sport’s contest and song,
I hope we can make a goal,
Showing dominance and control,
‘Tis not war, we get along.

The award is a shining cup,
With plaque to say: “You’re Great,”
A “Number One” is any debate,
Displayed as a glossy pin-up.

So, with modesty is a bit of pride,
Whimsy and joy in your gambol,
In time, of course, it will subside.

For now, let’s read the winner’s scroll,
Enjoy the music and the ride,
By evening all this will seem droll.
