Pot luck? by Stephen Kingsnorth

Poem

The world so full of gullible,
those traps set for vulnerable,
the western, anxious capital,
their assets as they climb or fall,
both stocks and shares, or fortune’s wares,
but more in their relationships –
their stock in sharing lives, of love,
companionship in heart and mind.

Folk warn ‘Friday the 13th’ here,
clear falling mirrors, no black cats,
left shoulder salt, to throw when spilt,
claim winter warmth, lump coal by door,
avoid slant ladders on the street,
wear superstition as a cloak,
invisible the benefits.

The makings of luck, potty thought,
not heaven sent nor in the stars,
but in coincidence, events,
by agency of time and space.
Holistic is perspective’s need –
take heed, responsibility.
