Profundis by Stephen Kingsnorth

Four themes, reactions dreaded most –
not logical, but so it is –
if share head sick, depression felt,
there follows one or sometimes all.
‘Me too’, I’ll not deny be true –
they argue that perspective gives –
but minimises, leaving blue.
To stir the jolly, cause a laugh
is grimmest medicine; swallow, smile.
The question ‘why?’ seems reasonable,
less stranger asks, unfruitful course;
the same ‘how help?’, though caring pose,
confirms the worst, ‘if knew, not here’.
