The Wayfarer by Malusi Aphelele Mbangata

Poem

From varsity’s loam
To the holidays’ long-planned travels,
Clindy went back home
And with her family, took on the gravels.
At a distance afar, their vehicle met trouble
That was as simple to her father
As popping a bubble.
Just as her father’s hand came off the gear,
In the middle of nowhere,
Sprang from the woods many a deer,
Running from a lion’s scare.
One hit the van’s window screen,
Breaking it instantly,
Thus beyond Clindy’s scream,
They had to run too, and did so safely.
In the other side of the woods, they hid,
But a roaming tiger’s eyes caught them,
And when the tiger came on with greed,
A wayfarer, out of nowhere, saved them.
The wayfarer had all necessities to survive.
On some days they conquered the tigers.
Into fondness, he and her did dive,
‘Til for their sure escape and to end a leg pain, gave himself to the tigers.
