When Do We Lose Our Innocence? by Refiloe Khumo

Poem

When do we lose our innocence and submit to the vices of the world?
Why does life bend our sentient hearts & turn them into savage steel?
By whose design do we become ruthless miscreants?
How can we abide shredding the souls of others & not be haunted by our inhumane actions?
What has become of the social fabric, which breeds callous men who bring boundless destruction?
How is it that hands soaked in blood & acquainted with annihilating the innocent do not move these men?
What has become of the mercy which once dwelt in the hearts of these men?
Why has the humanity of these men become a foreign concept?
