When Time Stands Still by Thompson Emate

Poem

Time stands still,
A door opens,
And I step through into a different place,
A place in the wee hours of the day.

Time stands still,
And I’m ushered into a space just about to embrace the morning light,
There’s something strange about this place,
Something that defies the time continuum.

I see people walking with prompt, quick steps,
And vehicles moving with an odd, soundless speed.
There’s something beautiful about this place that I can’t explain,
Something embracing that I can’t fathom.

I try to approach a man to whom my heart is drawn,
Though he appears to be a sexagenarian,
I can’t seem to catch up with him,
So I run to reach him.

I greet him, and he responds in an amiable tone,
Just as I’m about to ask where I am,
Trumpets sound in the sky,
Filling the air with harmonious music.

The sun has risen high,
And time takes flight.
Nothing seems odd.
I’m back home,
Back to its perplexities and complexities.
